Title of Talk: New p-adic Methods In Number Theory
Abstract:
Ever since Kummer's work on the arithmetic of cyclotomic integers, p-adic methods have been a crucial tool in number theory. In recent years, a new perspective on the application of these methods has emerged: the so-called p-adic Langlands program.
In this talk I will give an introduction to some of the ideas and results of this program, with an emphasis on aspects of the program that are accessible to non-specialists, but which give a sense of the interplay between analysis and algebra which is characteristic of p-adic techniques.
