Intro to Analysis
Math 523, Fall 2009

Welcome to my Analysis class page !!
All class announcements and assignments appear here.
I will set up an email list from SPIRE: if you do not get an email from me within the first week or two, email me to get onto the list.

Information

Robin Young is the instructor. Here are my office hours.

Class meets : Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 am in Lederle GRT room 119.

The text is : "Fundamental Ideas of Analysis,"
by Michael Reed
John Wiley & Sons, 1998

Course work

Grades will be based on assigned work and class interaction and participation. A possible rough breakdown of grades is : final 30%, midterm 25%, homework 35%, and class participation and demonstrated effort (subjective) 10%.

We'll have a midterm and a final exam. The midterm will be Tuesday, October 20th, in class. Here's a practice exam. No calculators on exams!

The final exam has been scheduled: it is on Monday, 12/14 at 8:00 am in LGRT 119. I'll likely post a practice exam as it approaches.

Homework

I've posted the problems on the homework page. Due dates are subject to change, depending on how we progress. Also, I've rearranged some sections according to the order in which I expect to cover them: again, this may change.

Please turn in assignments on time, and let me know if I'm not giving you enough time to complete them !!

Here are some notes on Landau's little-oh & Big-Oh notation. It is not a homework set!

Syllabus

We will work through the text ``Fundamental Ideas of Analysis'', by Michael Reed. Our goal will be to cover Chapters 1-6 and a little extra if we can. In an ideal world, I'd try to spend approximately the following time on each chapter: This totals 12 weeks. I'd like to cover one more chapter, say Chap.9, Fourier series, if there's time to do so. Please note that this list is for my reference only, and it is most unlikely we'll follow this schedule!

Your Responsibilities

Please ask questions in and out of class. Remember that we learn best by doing, and so help your colleagues out as much as you can (with hints and discussion, not copies of solutions). I like a relaxed class with a lot of dialogue, but please do be sensitive to the mood and pace of the class.

About assigned work: I expect to collect homework every three classes or so. There will usually be at least a week for each assignment. That said, start early and please turn it in on time! Be warned: the problem sets are longer than one night's worth of work, and need to be done as we cover the relevant coursework. We are all adults here, and it is your responsibility to come up with a system that works for you. I don't have the time, energy or desire to tell you which problems to do each night.

Please let me know in advance of any special circumstances which may prevent you from attending classes. Help each other out and discuss difficulties, but do your own work. You are expected to know the difference between shared and copied work. Cheating of any type will not be tolerated and will be harshly dealt with. Please be courteous to and considerate of your colleagues.
