Policy Statement on Calculators: Although we do not REQUIRE students to have anything more than a scientific calculator, we strongly recommend that students have a graphing calculator, especially for material in the course after Midterm 1. The instructors and the TAs are familiar with and can help you use any of the TI-8x calculators, i.e. TI-82, TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86 and TI-89. If you use another graphing calculator, such as an HP or a Casio we may not be able to help you with using it unless you also bring the manual when you come for help and we do not guarantee that we can help you with these other calculators even if you have a manual although it is likely that we will be able to figure things out with the manual.

Your grade will be determined by the following formula:

Two 1 1/2 hour evening exams           (25% each)

            Class participation, homework, quizzes (20%)

            Final exam - 2 hours                                         (30%)

Exam 1           Thursday 6 March, locations and time to be announced

Make-up     Wednesday 5, locations and time to be announced

Exam 2            Thursday 17 April, locations and time to be announced

Make-up      Wednesday 16 April, locations and time to be announced

All exams are multiple choice.

Calculators may be used on all exams.

NO make-up exams, other than those listed above, will be given.

The following is an example of a student’s grade as computed at the end of the semester:

Spring 2008

Daily calendar for sections with lectures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday

OWL Homework:

The 20% of your grade given for homework is obtained using the OWL computer homework system.  The nature of this system will be explained in class.  It is the same system used in Chemistry and several other departments.  The following is a tentative schedule of the lectures in the entire course.

Each OWL assignment will be opened in the system approximately 1 day before the lecture is given and will  close  on a day specified in the assignment.  The first  assignment will be open for almost two weeks in order to give you time to become familiar with OWL and subsequent assignments will be open for shorter periods so that a few weeks into the semester each assignment will be open for around six days.   Before each evening exam, the OWL assignments will be reopened for a few days so that you can make up any missed homework.
