May 6: The Final Exam will be on
Tuesday, May 20 from 4pm to 6pm in LGRT 101. There will be 5
regular problems and 1 bonus problem. It will mainly cover the materials
after Exam 3, namely, Note 6 and 7, but you also need to be familar with
previous materials. A Practice
Exam with Solutions is given for
your preparation.
April 3: Exam 3 will be in
class on Friday, April 11. There are 4 problems with total score
50, 3 from Chapter 3 (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4) and 1 from Chpater 5 (5.1,
5.2, 5.4). The following are possible problems:
(1) Finding the remainder using congruence.
(2) Prove divisibility using congruence and/or using Fermat's little
theorem.
(3) Equivalence relation, including its defining set $S$ and
partition.
(4) Finding the multiplicative inverse of an element in $\Z_p$.
(5) Using congruence to prove something.
(6) Something involving the decimal expansions.
March 5: Exam 2 will be in class on Friday, March 14. There are 4 problems with total score 50. It covers mathematical induction including Recursion and Chapter 2 (2.1, 2.2, 2.5). You can use NOTES 2 and 3 to study. Homework sets 4 and 5 are important in preparation for exam 2.
Feb 12: Exam 1 will be in class on Friday, Feb. 22. There are 4 problems with total score 25. It covers Chapter 1 and one problem on mathematical induction. Topics in Chapter 1 include Truth table, Quantification, and Proofs, which are responsible for the other three problems. For practice, the first 3 Homework sets should be sufficient. Pay some special attention to the proofs involving sets.
