113 Course Instructor:
Zhigang Han TA and Co-seminar 391A leader:
Elizabeth Rossolimo Textbook: An Introduction to Mathematical Thinking (Algebra and Number Systems), Gilbert and Vanstone, Prentice Hall, 2005. Additional materials by instructor. Course Description: Math 300 introduces mathematical rigor and proof in the context of several topics, such as sets and functions, induction, number theory, real numbers, and infinite sets. It is intended to help you learn to read, understand, and construct coherent, logically correct proofs and thereby to make the transition from calculus to the more theoretical junior-senior courses, especially those in abstract algebra and modern analysis. You will create written mathematical proofs for nearly every class. You are expected to participate actively in class, including at the co-seminar. Prerequisites: Math 132 or 136, or consent of instructor. Note: Math 300 students are required to register also for the 1-credit co-seminar Math 391A. Seminar times will be arranged during the first week of classes.
Grading Policy: A numerical score of 88-100 equals A;
77-88 at least B; 66-77 at least C; 55-66 at least D. Exams:
There will be 3 in class mid-term exams (the lowest midterm exam
score will be dropped) and the cumulative final exam. The
schedule of exams are as follows. Make-up policy: No make-up exams will be given for midterm exams. Note that only the best 2 midterm exams count. If you are officially justified to miss at least 2 midterm exams, I will adjust your grade by putting more weight on the final exam. Two weeks notice is required to request a final exam make-up if you have an official conflict. Homework: Homework will be assigned each week and will be collected every Friday. The assignments will appear on the left. No late homework will be accepted. Two lowest scores will be dropped. You are encouraged to work with or to get help from your fellow students. However, you must write your own solutions, and you must name all your collaborators. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. Attendence: Attendence and participation are important for your success in this course. While I do not intend to assign a concrete score for attendence, frequent absences and active class participation will both be reflected in your grade, one way or the other.
Calculator Policy: Calculator is allowed for the course,
including during the exams.
