Course description

This course is a continuation of Math 461. We will begin by studying the symmetries of the plane and the sphere. Then we will construct the hyperbolic plane and study its geometry. The hyperbolic plane is a curved surface with many amazing properties. For example, the circumference of a circle drawn on the hyperbolic plane grows exponentially as the radius increases.

Textbook

The course text is The four pillars of geometry by J. Stillwell. SpringerLink.

Homework

There will be weekly homework, due at the beginning of Wednesday's class (first homework due 2/4/13).

Exams

There will be one midterm exam and one final exam.

The midterm exam is Wednesday 3/11/15, 7:00PM--8:30PM, in LGRT 177. There is a review session for the midterm on Tuesday 3/10/15, 7:00PM--8:30PM, in LGRT 177. Please try the review questions here before the review session.

Solutions to the midterm exam are here. The exam itself is here.

The final exam is Friday 5/1/15, 10:30AM--12:30PM, in LGRT 177. Please try the review questions here. Solutions to the review questions are here. I will go over the review questions in class on Thursday 4/30/15. There will also be an (optional) review session on Thursday 4/30/15, 7:00PM--9:00PM, in LGRT 173.

Calculators, notes, and the textbook are not allowed on exams and quizzes. You should bring your student ID (UCard) to each exam.
