## Undergraduate Advising Information and Admission to the Major [1]

**Advising Office:** LGRT 1521E is open during these times [5].

**Phone:** 413-545-2282

**Becoming a Math Major:** Students wishing to major in Mathematics should stop by 1521E for information. Students interested in math as a secondary major or the dual degree should first read the Minor and Secondary Major page [6].

**Criteria for Admission to the Major:** Students need to meet with Jacob Lagerstrom [5] before being admitted to the major (drop in whenever the office is open, see above). Students who hold junior year status or higher will also have to meet with the Chief Undergraduate Advisor Stathis Charalampidis [7] before being admitted to the major. There are no specific criteria for admission, other than the ability to complete the major in a reasonable timeframe. Majors should, however, be aware that a C or better is needed in Math 132 in order to take certain upper level courses required for the major. Students will need to declare a concentration upon joining the major.

**Existing Majors: **To change or add a second concentration, or to switch from SM-Math to BS-Math, please email Jacob Lagerstrom [5].

**Interested in the Minor? ** Students wishing to minor in math should consult the Minor and Secondary Major page [6].

**Drop-in advising:** All students are welcome to walk-in advising hours [8] or to drop by the office when it is open and meet with Jacob.

## Peer Advisors

### Julien Brenneck

I am a senior Math Major with a concentration in **Math Computing** and a **double Major** in **Computer Science**. I do **research** in Numerical Linear Algebra under Professor Eric Polizzi [10], working on robust eigensolvers, with applications in nanoelectronics. I spent the last summer at the **Lawrence Berkeley National Lab** in the Materials Science department, working on an **analysis** of **statistical** and **machine learning**** **methodology in materials informatics. I spent the last two years as an **undergraduate TA** for Compsci 121, and previously served on the technical committee at **WMUA**.

### Brian Doan

I am a junior **double majoring** in **mathematics** and **economics** with concentrations in **statistics** and **actuarial science**. On campus, I am heavily involved with jobs and extracurricular activities that not only help build my own personal skills, but also help others achieve and accomplish their own goals. I am a second year **Resident Assistant** in Cance Hall (Southwest), and I love helping first-year residents navigate the craziness we call college. Although I am not Korean, I am also the treasurer of the **Korean Students Association** where I create fundraisers and help budget for monthly events. Throughout my time at UMass, I have struggled with knowing what my dream career would be. I spent several summers shadowing **actuaries, data analysts,** and **scientists** at various **insurance companies** and **banks**. Now, I am excited to have developed a true passion for data analytics and I hope to work my way up to becoming a **data scientist** one day!

### Diana Hansen

I am a senior completing my **dual degree** in **Math** with a concentration in **Actuarial Science** and **Finance** with a concentration in **Risk Management**. I passed the first three **actuarial exams** and had an **actuarial internship** this past summer at **Willis Towers Watson** on the Health and Benefit team. Also, I am the Vice-President of **Gamma Iota Sigma (the Actuary Club)**, a **Math 127/128 TA**, and have participated in the **ASA Five College DataFest**.

### Jessica Lam

I am a junior Math major **(Statistics concentration)** and **Psychology minor**. I am interested in a career in **analysis** after graduation and then possibly attending graduate school after a few years of working. I was a **New Students Orientation Leader** in the summer of 2017 and 2018, so we might have met during your orientation session! I am planning to **study abroad** next semester at the **University of Kent in Canterbury, UK**. Currently, I am secretary of a **Registered Student Organization**, **StudentX**. We organize and host a TED-style conference every semester. In my free time, I like to swim and attend group fitness classes.

### Fiona McCann

Fiona McCann is a senior in the **Honors College** with a **double major** in **Applied Math** and **Psychology**. Along with being a peer advisor, she is the **Supervisory Teaching Assistant** for Math 127 and a **Resident Assistant** in Birch Hall! She is also involved in intramural sports, specifically volleyball and wallyball! Over the past few years, Fiona has had an **internship** with the **US Navy** as a **Technical Analyst** and this past summer was a **Research Assistant** at the **University of Oxford, Oxford UK** in creating **mathematical models** for mapping mood in bipolar disorder, which is now the basis for her **Honors Thesis**. Originally a **Pure Math** concentration, Fiona knows a lot about both **Pure** and **Applied** tracks as well as **double majoring** and **honors** requirements!

### Brian Vannah

I am a Senior Math major with concentrations in **pure math** and **statistics**. I also have a **secondary major** in** Computer Science**. I enjoy being a part of the **ACM Cybersecurity Club**, **Pentest Club**, and the **CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program**. For more fun, I also play lots of soccer and go to events like **Hack UMass**. Franklin is my favorite dining common. This summer, I was an **IT intern** at **MacDill Air Force Base** in Tampa, FL.

### Brenna Walsh

Brenna Walsh is a senior at UMass majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in **Teaching** and a minor in **Education**. She is **president of the newly formed Math Teaching Club** on campus and has spent time **tutoring** at Amherst Regional High School. She was a clerk at Worcester Market before they closed their doors and is currently a **grader** for Math 370, Junior Year Writing, as well as working at the **Procrastination Station** in the library. Outside of UMass, Brenna is also enlisted in the **Army National Guard** as a Forward Observer, having completed basic training this past summer.

### Fusheng Yang

My name is Fusheng Yang, and I am a senior math major with concentrations in **applied math** and **statistics**. I plan to pursue further studies in statistics after graduation. I started doing **research** since last summer, and I am currently in two statistics **research projects**, DNA variant caller and human rights data analysis. I am also an undergraduate **teaching assistant** in the math department. Other than school, I enjoy hiking, traveling, skiing and scuba diving. I love teaching and talking about math, so please come by if you want to talk or need any help!
