Goldwater Scholarship (Posted 10-19-2009)
Dear All:
Please suggest some nominations for the Goldwater Scholarship. We've
had some success in the past, with Michael Krainin and Heather
Harrington winning in recent years. The sense I have is that research
and letters are slightly more important than GPA, but GPA should be
around at least 3.5. So if you know of an undergrad who fits the
bill, let me know and encourage them to apply.
Best,
Robin

Please read the following announcement and urge qualified students to
apply. I know CNS has outstanding students and it is important that
students apply for opportunities like this. The Goldwater looks for
students with high GPA's, proven experience in a research lab and a well
rounded college experience. Faculty letters of recommendation are
critical. Please urge students to apply! Please urge faculty to urge
outstanding students to apply. Thanks.
I am pleased to announce that the competition is open for the
Goldwater Scholarship, The *Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Program* was established by Congress in
1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater. The purpose of the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education
Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified
individuals to those fields of academic study and research. The
Foundation will award undergraduate scholarships to outstanding
students, to be known as Barry M. Goldwater Scholars, in the
spring of 2010 for use during the 2010?2011 academic year. The
awards will be made on the basis of merit to college juniors and
seniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue
careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
To be considered, a student must be nominated by the University
of Massachusetts using the official online nomination process on
the Foundation's website.
Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for *undergraduate*
tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of
$7,500 annually.
If you know of an outstanding student who fits these criteria
(and who are not planning to apply to medical school) please
send them to the Goldwater website
(
http://www.act.org/goldwater/). They can begin the process by
logging in and starting their application. The on-campus
deadline for registration is Nov. 13. Students must have
submitted, by that date, the information required on the
application which includes a research proposal. They must also
have letters of recommendation from 3 faculty members.
Incomplete applications will be considered by that date, but
priority will be given to students who have a complete set of
materials ready for review.
You may direct any questions about the scholarship to our campus

Our campus has successfully nominated 10 Goldwater Scholars
since 1998 and we look forward to continued success. To do so,
