NES/MAA Collegiate Mathematics Competition - November 20, 2009

The Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America will
hold its 4th Collegiate Mathematics Competition on November 20th, 2009 at
the Fall Meeting at Western New England College. This will be a team
competition for undergraduate students open to all colleges and
universities of the Section. This will be great fun for first-time
competitors as well as competition veterans. It can also be a great
warm-up for the Putnam exam, which takes place a couple of weeks after the
Collegiate Mathematics Competition. The questions are meant to be
stimulating, but not as difficult as those on the Putnam exam. The
competition will take place during the Fall 2009 Section Meeting at
Western New England College in Springfield, MA, on Friday, November 20th
from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The competition stands at the center of a great
day for students at the meeting, including opportunities to hear
accessible talks by faculty and student speakers, and if desired, a
banquet and after-dinner talk. The website for the competition is

You can access the official rules there, some practice problems, and the
questions and solutions for the first three competitions. You can also
look at the old practice problems, as well as register online (via an
Adobe Reader form). Winning teams will be announced and prizes awarded
after the banquet. Prizes are $100 for the winning team, $75 for the
second place team, and $50 for the third place team. All competitors will
receive a license for Mathematica for Students, courtesy of Wolfram
Research.

Team members need to register for the WNEC meeting and pay fees by
Tuesday, November 16th. Go to the meeting website at
