Grad school talk (Posted 10-2-2009)

Attachments:
It would be great if I could also stop by U Mass at Amherst to
give a presentation to your undergraduate math majors. Wednesday
around noon time would work be most convenient for me but I can also
consider Monday or Thursday of these times don't work for you.
Typically math club meetings or lunch breaks are good opportunities.

The presentation would be a general introduction about applying
to grad school with a pitch for the Ohio State program towards the
end of the talk. Below is the abstract I gave to Smith and Holyoke.

Thank you and best regards, Thomas Kerler

Title:
Applying to Graduate Programs in Mathematics.

Speaker: Thomas Kerler
Vice Chair for Graduate Studies
Department of Mathematics
The Ohio State University

Abstract:

What are good reasons to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics? How
can you prepare early during you college sophomore or junior years?
What are strategies to get informed about and to choose graduate
programs to apply to? What does an effective application look like?
What is the relevance of recommendation and intent letters, grades,
GRE scores, research experience, etc? How do you negotiate admissions
and declinations and make your final decision?

This presentation will shed light on these and more questions from the
point of view of a graduate recruiter from a large research
university.

We will introduce, in particular, the graduate program in mathematics
at The Ohio State University.

Pizza will be provided courtesy Ohio State.
