There are two commercial communications packages available from the Office of Information Technologies (O.I.T.) Personal Computing Support Services (Room 203 Goodell, Phone: 5-2036) at very reasonable prices: Procomm+ for MS-DOS systems, and MicroPhone II for Apple computers. Both programs come pre-configured for access to the O.I.T. modems.
Different communications software will undoubtedly have a variety of different options but a few of the standard setup options and the relevant telephone numbers are given below.
The most convenient way to connect to the RCF systems from off campus is to use the dial-in service maintained by the O.I.T.
This modem pool provides access at the highest baud rate available and is capable of handling hundreds of connections at once.
Once a connection has been established wait a few seconds and the following message should appear.
AutoProtocolDetect - Begin protocol or enter 4 returns for interactive mode.
Hit the return key four times and the menu pictured below will appear.

Selecting option 18 allows you to connect to a variety of systems on
campus. To reach our main computer just enter math. To
reach any of our other systems enter the name of the computer that
you want to reach followed by .math, i.e. stone.math.
When you logout from a machine you will be returned to this menu. You can then choose another option or disconnect by typing Q.
Another item in this menu that is particularly helpful is selection 4, Library Services. This allows you to browse the Five College Library On-Line Card Catalog.
This provides direct connection to the RCF through a 2400 baud modem bank. Once the connection is established wait about five seconds and the following 'sine' login prompt will appear.
UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0 (shark10)login: stowell
The connection will be broken when you logout from 'sine'.
