DEPARTMENT oF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS
UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS/AMHERST
Logging Into Department Computers
Logging Into Computers remotely:
Currently there are three computers you may use to connect to the
department's network:
ssh1.math.umass.edu (Sun Blade)
ssh2.math.umass.edu (Sun Blade)
ssh3.math.umass.edu (Sun Blade)
The preferred method for logging into the SSH systems
from outside of our network is to connect using:
ssh.math.umass.edu
This method will allow you connect to any of the SSH
systems listed above in a "round robin" fashion. For
example if one system is down, you would connect to
the next available system from the above list. Note
that you can also log into ssh1,ssh2 or ssh3 directly.
To log into a computer from outside the department's network you
must have an ssh client installed on your local system. Unix
based systems such as Linux and Macs already have this client
installed.
-
Open a terminal session on your system
-
Choose one of the systems from the list above
-
For example ssh -l username ssh.math.umass.edu
Windows systems must have an ssh client installed. Good, non-commercial,
free versions are available from:
SSH non-commercial site #1
SSH Secure Shell Download
Logging into the department's network over the WEB:
SSH over the WEB is a convenient means of accessing
our network when an ssh client may not
be installed on your local computer (i.e. you are using a system at
another site, an airport kiosk or
hotel. Note-That it is preferable for you to use an ssh client versus
this method when possible. You'll find the performance much better with
the added benefit of a more secure connection.
SSH Over the Web
- Click on the following SSH Over the Web
- Enter your account and password
Logging into other department computers while connected to our network:
Once you have logged into one of the remote servers listed above, you may log into several other
public systems if you desire. Or, if you are already working within our network at your office
or lab workstation, you may log into any of the following as well. Simply do the following:
-
Open a terminal session on your system
-
Choose one of the systems from the list below
-
For example ssh -l username rcf1422-1.math.umass.edu
- rcf1422-1.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 32-bit Linux)
- rcf1422-2.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 32-bit Linux)
- rcf1422-3.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 32-bit Linux)
- rcf1422-4.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 32-bit Linux)
- rcf1422-5.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 32-bit Linux)
- rcf1537-7.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 64-bit Linux)
- rcf1537-8.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 64-bit Linux)
- rcf1537-9.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 64-bit Linux)
- rcf1537-10.math.umass.edu (CentOS 5 64-bit Linux)
