Number Theory

Michael Broshi, Paul Gunnells, Farshid Hajir, Peter Norman, Tom Weston, Siman Wong

The research interests of the number theory faculty at UMass Amherst include algebraic number theory (the study of the arithmetic of finite extensions of the rational numbers), analytic number theory (the study of prime numbers and their distribution), arithmetic algebraic geometry (the study of solutions of polynomial equations over the rational numbers and related fields), Galois representations (the study of matrix representations of Galois groups) and automorphic forms (the study of arithmetic via objects from geometry and representation theory).

The Five College Number Theory Seminar meets weekly at Amherst College. The seminar features talks from prominent number theorists from across the country as well as talks on seminar members on their current research.
