I will review the basic concepts of the theory of polarized variations
of Hodge structure introduced by Griffiths in the late 60's as a way of
"linearizing" the problem of studying degenerations of smooth projective
varieties. I will discuss, in particular, the asymptotic behavior of
variations. I will make every effort to make the presentation accessible
to graduate students.
